West Mainland

The westside of Shetland often has the best weather, and gets most sunshine, particluarly during the summer months when the east coast may be enveloped in sea fog whilst the west is warm and sunny. Almost regardless of the wind you will usually find a sheltered bay, and the surrounding water offer excellent fishing.

There are three marinas, and several other anchorages on this stretch of coast. While rural tradion liesd firmly within crofting, the west mainland has latterly become one of the main centres of the seafood industry,  with many fish farms and mussel lines. These are marked and lit, yellow bouys, and yachts should keep clear.
